Mass. retailers see 3.9% holiday sales boost

Massachusetts retailers are predicting a 3.9 percent increase in retail sales during the holiday period, citing the highest consumer confidence levels in seven years.

Based on a survey of its 3,500 members, the Retailers Association of Massachusetts released its prediction, which is just shy of the 4.1 percent sales increase forecast by the National Retail Federation.

"Economic growth, lower unemployment, and the lowest gas prices we have seen in four years have a lot to do with that boost in consumer confidence, and we have seen that reflected in retail sales growth in recent months," Retailers Association of Massachusetts President Jon Hurst said in a statement. "Low consumer debt levels, and improving home and 401k values are helpful to boost confidence levels as well. And given a very competitive marketplace, consumers will once again enjoy an environment of extensive promotions and value from a multitude of shopping options."

Sales during the 2013 holiday season rose 3.3 percent over 2012, marking the fourth straight annual increase.
