Massachusetts has reported its first coronavirus death, a Suffolk County man in his 80s who had existing health conditions that put him at a higher risk.
The death, announced by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Friday afternoon, was joined soon after by the latest daily total cases count, which hit 413. That's an increase of 85 cases in a single day.
The number of cases in Worcester County grew to 19, up from 14 the day before. In 58 cases statewide, patients have needed to be hospitalized.
Through Friday, 3,132 Massachusetts residents have been tested for coronavirus through either the State Public Health Laboratory or through commercial labs, the Department of Public Health said, including Quest Diagnostics' facility in Marlborough.
Screening sites have also been set up for referred patients at UMass Memorial Medical Center's University Campus in Worcester and for medical professionals and first responders at the CVS pharmacy at 720 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury.
The Department of Public Health advises people to remain home if they are mildly symptomatic, or if they become more ill to speak to their healthcare provider about whether they need to be assessed in person.
Cases have exceeded 16,000 nationally as of Friday just after 4 p.m., according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, including 216 deaths. Worldwide cases exceed 258,000, including more than 11,000 deaths.
