A new testing process for coronavirus begun Friday has found its first positive test in Massachusetts, the state Department of Public Health said late Monday.
The patient is a Norfolk County woman in her 20s who recently traveled to Italy with a school group. She is recovering at home, the state said.
The woman's test results came back positive Monday evening, giving Massachusetts a second coronavirus case after a UMass Boston student who recovered at home. As of last week, 608 people in Massachusetts have been quarantined, including 231 still in isolation.
The United States had 62 cases as of Monday, according to the World Health Organization. Cases have also been reported in Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Since January, Massachusetts public health officials have tested 12 residents, including the first confirmed case and now the first presumptive positive case. Of those 12, three have been tested since Friday when the State Public Health Laboratory began testing patients after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to use the test kits.
Coronavirus risks to the public in Massachusetts remain low, Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said.
