Two laboratories have been approved by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission to begin testing marijuana, another milestone in the soon-to-come legal recreational marijuana retail market.
Marijuana has been legal to consume recreationally in Massachusetts, but no stores have yet opened because no independent labs have been authorized by the state to test marijuana products for safety first.
MCR Labs, which is based in Framingham, and CDX Analytics of Salem have already been approved by the state to test marijuana as part of the state's existing medical marijuana industry. The Cannabis Control Commission, which is expected to eventually be based in Worcester's Union Station, announced the authorization of the two labs on Wednesday.
The commission didn't give a timeline for when testing may be complete and stores may be able to open.
The commission has approved 64 provisional licenses, of which 12 final licenses have been approved. Cultivate in Leicester and New England Treatment Access in Franklin were among the first to be licensed as dispensaries last month.
Worcester already has a medical marijuana dispensary, Good Chemistry on Harrison Street, and the city's Board of Health voted this month to approve a license for Prime Wellness, a another medical dispensary on Pullman Street.
