Job numbers in Massachusetts took a turn for the worse in August, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the state lost 4,800 jobs, pushing the unemployment rate up from 6.1 to 6.3 percent.
In addition, the BLS' initial July gains of 1,600 were revised downward to 300.
The biggest loss came in education and health services, which declined by 2,600 jobs, in August. Educational services accounted for 2,000 of the losses while health care and social assistance lost 600. Year over year, the sector added 2,800 jobs.
The second largest loss for the month came from professional, scientific and business services which dropped 1,900 jobs, the sector's first decline since June 2011. It h had a net gain of 24,300 jobs over the year.
Other industries' job losses included construction (1,400), leisure and hospitality (800), information (400) and trade, transportation and utilities (1,400).
Things were better for financial activities, which added 300 jobs, as well as government, which grew by 3,400. Meanwhile, manufacturing saw no change as a gain in durable goods offset a loss in non-durable goods.
Despite August's losses, jobs for the month were still up 40,200 compared to 2011 and jobs are up 31,400 year to date, for a total of 3,243,200. The unemployment rate is also 1.1 percent below the August 2011 rate of 7.4 percent.
This was the second straight month that the state's unemployment rate rose, after remaining flat in June.
