The 94.9 percent of Massachusetts residents who have health insurance represents the highest rate in the nation, according to the Massachusetts Budget & Policy Center.
The figure is from 2007 to 2009. In 2006, Massachusetts mandated that residents have health insurance.
Hawaii followed in second with 92.2 percent and Texas had the smallest percentage of residents covered at 74.5 percent.
Nationwide, there was a 16.7 percent spike in the number of people without health insurance in 2009 compared to the year before. About 50.7 million Americans do not have coverage, according to the center.
