Massachusetts is joining seven other states in an effort to get more plug-in electric vehicles on the road.
Gov. Deval Patrick and the chief executives from the other states announced a partnership Thursday that has established a goal of having 3.3 million plug-in vehicles on the road in the eight states by 2025, according to a statement from Massachusetts chapter of The Sierra Club.
The other states are: California, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Together, the states will develop fueling infrastructure and EV-ready building codes, buy electric vehicles for state fleets, and expand incentives and public education programs to dramatically increase the number of plug-in electric and fuel cell vehicles, according to The Sierra Club.
The Bay State chapter applauded the governor for what it called a “bold” move.
Electric vehicles "are now a proven commodity -- sales have grown by 200 percent a year for the past two years,” said Ryan Black, director of the Massachusetts Sierra Club. “They already are working for many Massachusetts drivers and with more infrastructure, incentives, and education, they will continue to grow at a rapid pace."
