Massachusetts added 8,700 jobs in March, helping push the state's unemployment rate down to 6.5 percent, according to preliminary numbers from the state's Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The reported job gains came on the heels of a revised jump of 7,200 new jobs in February, when the unemployment rate was 6.9 percent.
The state's jobless rate for March is well below the national rate of 8.2 percent.
The Bay State's private sector added 8,900 jobs during the month, with the largest gains coming in these three groupings: professional, scientific and business services; trade, transportation and utilities; and education and health services.
During the first three months of 2012, Massachusetts has added close to 30,000 jobs, according to the labor and development agency. The state's workforce for March totaled more than 3.24 million.
