Mass. jobless rate drops, but so does number of jobs

Preliminary federal labor estimates said Massachusetts lost 1,600 jobs last month, but also saw a drop in its unemployment rate to 6 percent, the Patrick administration said Thursday.

Despite The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) preliminary estimates showing a dip in Massachusetts’ unemployment rate in April to 6 percent, the state also lost 1,600 jobs for the month.

The Bay State’s unemployment rate dropped 0.3 of a percentage point from March, with about 210,000 people out of work, the administration said, citing data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The commonwealth lost 1,600 jobs, although the drop in the private sector was a much deeper 3,000. Industries showing the steepest drops were leisure and hospitality (down 4,300 jobs), professional, scientific and business services (2,000) and education and health services (800). These were offset by growth in trade, transportation and utilities (up 3,400), financial (400) and construction (200).

The unemployment rate is down  a full percentage point from April 2013, when it stood at 7 percent.
