The colder climate might make it surprising, but Massachusetts is the seventh-best state to retire, according to a new report by the website Bankrate.com.
The Bay State scored high on cultural vitality (third), health care (fifth) and seniors' wellbeing (ninth). On the other hand, the state was also sixth-highest in cost of living and 10th highest on taxes.
New Hampshire landed at No. 1, thanks to good health care, low crime and a high general wellbeing for seniors.
Sun Belt states might typically come to mind for retirement, like Florida or Arizona, but they actually didn't fare as well. Florida ranked 17th, hurt by crime and lower-quality health care. Arizona was 12th, suffering a bit from crime and a lack of culture.
Massachusetts, by the way, isn't exactly the worst when it comes to weather. The state ranked 29th, ahead of northern New England states, the upper Midwest, and, worst of all, Alaska.
It can also be a bit surprising Massachusetts did so well despite its high cost-of-living. Respondents in the Bankrate.com survey called affordability the factor they considered most heavily in retirement.
