Mass. hospitals post staffing plans

Courtesy The Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association opposes a ballot initiative to mandate nurse staffing rations, but has helped post hospital staffing plans for 12 years.

Nurse staffing plans at Massachusetts hospitals in 2018 are available for public viewing online, the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association (MHA) announced Tuesday.

By visiting www.patientcarelink.org, consumers can view staffing plans for departments at specific hospitals. The budgeted plans also show descriptions of the type of care provided on the various units, the types of clinical staff providing care, and any changes in the types of patient care units from year to year.

This is the 12th year Massachusetts hospitals have voluntarily posted staffing information for public access, according to the MHA, which sponsors the website along with other healthcare industry groups.

The website also includes actual staffing plans, comparing actual staffing levels to budgeted plans. Those will be available in the spring, the MHA said.

Nurse staffing at Bay State hospitals is a hot-button topic, as unionized nurses are pushing a 2018 ballot initiative that would mandate nurse-to-patient ratios in Massachusetts hospitals. Opponents, including the MHA, say hospitals should be free to create their own staffing plans, making adjustments as needed depending on patient volume and acuity.
