A new study of home care costs reports they are holding steady in Massachusetts for 2016, but nursing home care remains much more expensive than the rest of the country.
The Cost of Care Survey released in late June by insurance holding company Genworth Financial found while the cost to receive long-term care services from a home health aide has increased nationally, these costs in Massachusetts have remained flat at a median cost of $4,767 a month.
However, the survey found although most home and long-term care remained relatively flat, the state was still much more expensive than the rest of the country with the median cost for a private nursing home costing $12,015 a month compared to $7,698 nationally and a semi-private nursing home costing $11,254 a month compared to $6,844 nationally. These Massachusetts figures represent an increase of 3.29 and 4.82 percent from 2015, respectively, according to Genworth.
The study found that the Worcester metro area was generally more affordable for home health care than the the rest of the state, comparing favorably to Boston and having lower nursing home, home health aide and assisted living costs than the state median, which was driven up by the Boston metro market.
