Massachusetts-based health insurers are among the best in the nation in terms of quality and services, according to the most recent ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance released Tuesday night.
When it came to consumer satisfaction, however, most Massachusetts insurers received moderate rankings.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts HMO and POS products, and Tufts Associated HMO/POS and Tufts Benefit Administrators, Inc. PPO were ranked five out of five. Most other Massachusetts insurers received 4.5 out of five points, including Blue Cross Blue Shield’s PPO, Worcester-based Fallon Community Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Health New England, Inc. and Neighborhood Health Plan, Inc.
Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company - Massachusetts, ConnectiCare of Massachusetts, Inc., and Connecticut General Life Insurance Company -- Massachusetts received four points, and United HealthCare Services Inc. and United Healthcare Insurance Company got three and a half. Aetna Life Insurance Company got three points.
All Massachusetts insurers who responded sufficiently to the survey received consumer satisfaction scores of 3.5 out of five or lower, with the exception of Tufts Benefit Administrators, Inc. PPO (4 points), Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s PPO (4 points), and Fallon Community Health Plan (4.5 points).
According to a press release from NCQA, just 10 percent of the 1,012 rated plans received a rating of 4.5 out of five or higher, and New England and Great Lakes states had the highest percentages of plans receiving top marks.
