Mass. Gets Props For Innovation

An annual innovation index released today, which benchmarks the state's innovation economy against nine other technology states, shows that Massachusetts leads in several areas including patents, research funding and education.

The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's John Adams Innovation Institute released its 2008 Index of the Massachusetts Innovation Economy today, the 12th index it has collected.

It benchmarks the state against nine leading technology states: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Per capita, Massachusetts rates first in the number of federal Small Business Innovation Research awards to the tune of $241 million, which supports innovation research and prototype development in many areas, including defense and medical devices.

The state also rated first per capita in funding from the National Institutes of Health and federal funding for R&D at universities and hospitals.

The institute also found that there has been a significant increase in Massachusetts residents receiving four-year college degrees in 2007 and 2008.

On the down side, the index showed that while the state continues to receive per capita the most SBIR funds, the amount it receives overall is declining. The index also showed that between 2003 and 2007, the real median household income of Massachusetts residents did not grow at all. The state also continues to have fewer adults with two-year college degrees compared to most benchmark states.
