Mass. gasoline prices rise by 7 cents

The price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Massachusetts has risen to $3.84 from last week’s $3.77, according to a Monday press release from travel association AAA Northeast.

The price continues an upward trend, now 38 cents up from one month ago, and 4 cents over the national average. These increases are likely due to headlines concerning Russian oil production cuts, according to AAA.

“The oil market, like the stock market, hates negative headlines, no matter how spec,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast vice president of public and government affairs, said in the press release. “And that is why we see the oil price back over $90 a barrel. More expensive oil usually leads to more expensive gasoline.”

The national average itself is also on the rise, up 4 cents from last week and 9 cents from last month.
