The average price of gas in Massachusetts rose by 15 cents last month, with prices now at $2.75, now higher than the price of gas after a 44-cent surge after Hurricane Harvey last September.
The data, released by auto club AAA Monday, comes as the price of crude oil hits $68 per barrel, a three-year high.
“That spike in crude oil, combined with increased demand as the summer travel season approaches, is sharply pushing prices at the pump,” said AAA Director of Public and Legislative Affairs Mar Maguire.
The state’s price of gas is still six cents below the national average for regular unleaded, but 43 cents higher than the price at this time last year, AAA said.
When Hurricane Harvey caused oil refineries to go offline in the Gulf of Mexico last September, prices surged by 44 cents to $2.70.
Those prices eventually fell to $2.43 at the end of 2017, but for the year, the average price of gas has risen by 32 cents, according to AAA’s data.
