The average gasoline price in Massachusetts is up two cents from last week, and 11 cents higher than a week prior, according to new data from travel organization AAA Northeast.

Gas in the state currently averages $2.21 per gallon of regular unleaded. Even with modest increases, that number is much lower than one year ago, when the average was $2.59 per gallon.

“That is the largest year-over-year difference at the beginning of January since 2015,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs. “AAA expects demand to dwindle in coming weeks and gas prices to likely be cheaper, especially if crude oil holds at the current price.”

Nationally, the average price is $2.25, the same as last week, according to AAA.
