State lawmakers are giving the gas tax and other ideas a second look after House Speaker Robert DeLeo last week invited ideas to boost transportation revenues. As they do, the price at the pumps is on the rise.
Lawmakers raised the gas tax by 3 cents a gallon in 2013, to 24 cents a gallon. AAA Northeast on Monday said gas prices in Massachusetts rose 5 cents a gallon over the past week, to an average of $2.44 per gallon.
The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.54.
"Since early February, gasoline demand has been steadily increasing while stocks have been gradually decreasing, which has boosted pump prices across the country," AAA's Mary Maguire said in a statement. "But the good news is that most motorists are not paying more at the pump than they were at this time last year."
AAA found prices ranging from a low of $2.24 to a high of $3.05. A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was $2.48.
