Mass. gas prices jump 9 cents in a week, as Texas refineries remain closed

Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have been on a steady increase since the start of the year.

This week’s gasoline prices in Massachusetts stand at $2.56 per gallon of regular unleaded, up 9 cents from a week ago, where the average was $2.47, according to the travel association AAA Northeast.

“When close to 40% of U.S. crude production is offline because refineries are closed, there is going to be pain at the pump until operations resume,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs. “The good news is the nearly two dozen impacted refiners are expected to restart operations this week, if they haven’t already.”

The closed refineries are largely in Texas, which has had to shut down much of the state due to a failure in its electricity and energy systems.

Massachusetts’ gasoline prices are retreating back to a year ago from around the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak within the US, with prices centered around the same range at $2.49. This comes after gas prices for the majority of 2020 were below the year-before average, as the demand for fuel dropped during the pandemic.

State gasoline prices have now surpassed the average from the first month of the year, with prices up 20 cents from January.
