Mass. gas prices fall ahead of Fourth of July

Gas prices, which normally rise heading into the busy summer travel season, are actually falling and have reached the lowest prices at this time of the year since 2005, AAA reported Monday.

The average price per gallon in the Massachusetts last week was $2.20 for regular unleaded self-serve, the automotive club said. Averages were $2.46 a gallon for mid-grade gas, $2.64 for premium and $2.45 for diesel.

A year ago, the average Massachusetts price was $2.25 a gallon, a nickel higher than today. The national average last week was $2.26.

AAA attributed the low prices to record-high refinery production rates, and high gasoline and crude oil inventory.
