Mass. gas prices drop 8 cents

Photo | State House News Service Gas prices in Massachusetts have been declining this month.

Massachusetts gasoline prices dipped 8 cents in the last week, now averaging $4.84 per gallon of regular unleaded on Tuesday.

Gas prices are now 10 cents below where they sat this time last month and $1.84 above this time last year, according to a Tuesday press release from travel association AAA Northeast.

The price drop is a response to slowing demand for gas, but the lull may not last long.

“Domestic gasoline demand dipped recently, which took some of the pressure off of pump prices. About 80% of stations are now selling regular for under $5 a gallon,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs, said in the press release. "But July is typically the heaviest month for demand as more Americans hit the road, so this trend of easing prices may very well be short-lived."

Massachusetts gas prices hover 4 cents per gallon above the national average.
