Following last week’s 11-cent drop, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is down another 11 cents in Massachusetts this week to $4.52.
Prices in the commonwealth remain higher than the national average, which is $4.35, down 17 cents from last week, according to a Monday press release from travel association AAA Northeast.
Last year at this time, the average price of gas was $3.02 in Massachusetts, as people were still limiting their travel due to the COVID pandemic.
“Consumers appear to be taking the pressure off their wallets as they enjoy fuel prices down 11% since their peak in mid-June,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs. “And there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic that pump prices will continue to fall in the near-term, particularly if the global price for oil does not spike. But the overall situation remains very volatile.”
This sentiment rings true, as oil prices have risen 2% since Russia announced on Monday it would tighten supply of natural gas to Europe increasing fears of oil scarcity.
