Gasoline prices in Massachusetts increased three cents this week to an average of $2.98 per gallon of regular unleaded, according to a Monday report from the travel association AAA Northeast.
The price is 88 cents higher than a year ago. The report cites growing confidence in vaccination trends, oil demand spikes, and reduced travel restrictions as factors increasing global crude oil prices and consequently, gas prices.
“Today, 89% of U.S. gas stations are selling regular unleaded for $2.75 or more. That is a stark increase over last July 4 when only a quarter of stations were selling gas for more than $2.25,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and government affairs at AAA Northeast, in a press release. “Road trippers will pay the most to fill up for the holiday since 2014.”
Nationally, the average is $3.09 a gallon, 2 cents higher than last week and 92 cents higher than this day last year. The average gas price in Massachusetts is 11 cents lower than the national average.
