Mass. employers more likely to offer health insurance

More than two out of three Massachusetts employers offered health insurance to their employers last year, an increase over past years and exceeding the national average, according to a new report by the Center for Health Information and Analysis.

Not as many Massachusetts workers receive coverage from those firms that do offer insurance, though, the report found. Last year, just 51% of state workers received coverage, compared to a national rate of 60%.

Still, Massachusetts companies are more likely than their national counterparts to offer insurance in the first place, 71% compared to 57%, the CHIA report said. The state rate was also an improvement over the last measurement in 2016, when 65% of employers were found to offer insurance.

Among other findings, the 2018 average total monthly premium was $617 for single coverage and $1,687 for family coverage. The average employee contribution was 26% for single coverage and 30% for family coverage.

In 2018, 70% of Massachusetts employees were offered a high-deductible health plan, and 39% were offered such a plan with a savings option. Roughly half of firms that didn't offer health insurance didn't do so because they weren't required to because of their small size.
