New data released by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Monday found that about 97% of breakthrough COVID-19 cases among vaccinated people have not resulted in hospitalization or death.
More specifically, 99.9% of breakthrough cases among those who are fully vaccinated and under the age of 60 did not result in death, and that was also true for 97% of fully vaccinated residents over the age of 60.
There have been no deaths reported in breakthrough cases among people under the age of 30, per DPH.
That said, the data found unvaccinated residents are five times more likely to contract COVID-19 than those who are fully vaccinated, and 31 times more likely to become infected than those who have received a booster.
"The data are clear,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, in a statement. “This review shows that fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts have near-universal protection from severe illness and death and that boosters are demonstrating even stronger protection from COVID.”
The DPH strongly urged all residents to get vaccinated and receive a booster as appropriate.
