The Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) has called for a review of the decision by insurer Delta Dental of Massachusetts to shift administration of its products from a nonprofit organization to a for-profit entity.
According Dr. Raymond Martin, president of the Southborough-based MDS, shifting to a for-profit corporation “significantly reduces the Massachusetts Division of Insurance oversight and threatens the core relationship between a dentist and a patient,” according to a statement issued Tuesday.
According to Martin, becoming a for-profit entity will restrict access for patients covered by Delta Dental. MassLive reported earlier this month that Delta Dental will operate a preferred provider organization, thereby restricting where dentists can send patients for specialist care.
The MDS has filed legislation that would enforce a review. The bill would, in effect, regulate Delta as a for-profit insurance company with the same Massachusetts Division of Insurance oversight it is subject to as a nonprofit, MDS said.
Delta Dental is the largest provider of dental benefits in Massachusetts.
