The past few months have been spent with state officials pushing to get as many Massachusetts residents vaccinated against COVID-19 as possible. But they still want to make sure people are also getting tested.
The Gov. Charlie Baker Administration said Tuesday it is extending a coronavirus testing initiative to June 30. It was slated to end March 31. The Stop the Spread campaign provides free testing at more than three dozen locations in communities statewide.
More than 1.8 million tests have been conducted as part of the campaign, according to the state. When including testing done through other locations and services, that number rises to nearly 17 million tests.
The number of new tests reported each day by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has fallen significantly in recent weeks as coronavirus cases themselves have dropped. On nine days in the past month, fewer than 10,000 daily tests were reported, compared to more than 30,000 tests a day at times through December and January, when cases peaked.
