Confirmed coronavirus cases in Massachusetts made their largest single-day jump on Tuesday since the pandemic started, topping 1,100 total cases, according to the state Department of Public Health.

Cases rose 49% in a single day, from 777 to 1,159. In Worcester County, cases jumped from 42 to 73, a spike of 74%.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the city of Worcester itself reported 19 cases but officials warned that total, too, would rise significantly. All 19 were in isolation and being monitored by the city's health department, the city said.

The number of dead rose to 11 from nine, with one woman in her 80s from Middlesex County and one in her 60s from Berkshire County. Worcester County's first death, which was reported Monday, was a woman in her 70s who the state said had underlying health conditions.

Middlesex County has a reported 304 cases and Suffolk County has 234. In 90 cases, a patient's home county was undetermined.

Cases continue rising sharply across Massachusetts and elsewhere as the virus spreads but also as testing has become more common. As of Tuesday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 11,749 tests conducted, up from 8,922 a day prior.

Even as health officials worry about upcoming hospital bed shortages, relatively few cases so far in Massachusetts have required hospitalization. As of Tuesday, at least 79 were hospitalized, although in 412 cases that status was still pending.
