The state's number of confirmed coronavirus cases hit 3,240 on Friday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, while Worcester County's total hit 219.

Those numbers are up in one day by 34% and 32%, respectively. The state had 823 new cases, and Worcester County had 53 new ones.

The state also announced 10 new deaths, bringing the total to 35. Four of the deaths, though none of the 10 new ones, were Worcester County residents.

As of Friday afternoon, cases in the city of Worcester itself total 55 cases, an increase from 38 the day prior.

UMass Memorial Health Care officials said in an online forum Friday with employees that 18 caregivers in the system had tested positive, a number they expect to rise.

"Our numbers are lower than many other places," Chief Medical Officer Andrew Karson said.

Massachusetts has now conducted more than 29,000 tests. Its rate of testing is the fifth highest in the country, according to an analysis from the COVID Project and The New York Times.

Of all coronavirus cases statewide, at least 288 have been hospitalized. In 1,953 cases, though, the Department of Public Health was unable to report whether the person was in a hospital.

Nationwide, cases have surpassed 97,000, with nearly 1,500 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.

The U.S. has more coronavirus cases than any other nation and ranks sixth in number of deaths. Worldwide, cases have risen past 585,000, with nearly 27,000 deaths.
