The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) plans to expand its Worcester campus over the next six years to accommodate a student body twice as large as it is today, the school announced.
With 1,200 students currently enrolled in various graduate programs at MCPHS in Worcester, the college cited a surge in demand for medical professionals as the impetus for growth.
"The education and health care fields are vibrant and dynamic, and educational institutions cannot sit still," MCPHS President Charles F. Monahan Jr. said in a statement.
MCPHS will increase capacity in existing programs and develop new ones to meet that demand, the statement said.
To accommodate the growth, the college will require new housing facilities for faculty, staff, students and their families. The college has entered into an agreement to acquire 29 condominium units known as the North High Gardens Condominium on Salisbury Street, and will seek additional housing in downtown Worcester, the statement said.
The expansion will take place over the next five to six years, according to David Ball, a spokesman for MCPHS.
The Worcester campus opened downtown in 2000. Since then, the college has invested $350 million in the downtown area, the statement said.
