Mevion Medical Systems is set to construct a $25 million dollar system that will bring proton cancer therapy for the first time to patients in the southeast region of the Netherlands.
The system will be located at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, within the ZON-PTC facility that is set to be completed in 2018. Mevion will install a MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System at the center.
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation that can target tumors more precisely than conventional radiation, according to the company, meaning there's less of a chance surrounding healthy tissue and organs could be damaged. Its precise nature makes it ideal for the treatment of tumors in sensitive areas, such as the brain, heart, lungs and near the eye.
Mevion invented compact proton therapy and installed the world's first compact proton therapy system in 2013, according to the company. The company is based in Littleton, with a presence in Europe, Japan and China.
