Mass. Clean Energy Job Growth Passes 11%
The clean energy economy in the Bay State grew nearly 10 times faster than the overall economy in the past year, according to the newly-released 2012 Massachusetts Clean Energy Industry Report.
The report, put out by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), found that the industry grew by 11.2 percent from July 2011 to last month, employing 71,523 people at 4,995 clean energy firms.
Growth is expected to continue at a rate of 12.4 percent over the next year, with an expected total of 80,405 jobs.
Most clean energy jobs are in the northeastern part of the state (32,362), but 13,863 people are employed in the sector in Central Massachusetts. Nearly 2 percent of the state's workforce is employed by clean energy firms.
Many clean energy firms have more than one focus area. Sales and installation firms employ the most workers. The report found that two-thirds of clean energy companies have 10 or fewer full-time employees.
"This study illustrates just how strong and diverse the clean energy economy is in Massachusetts," said Phil Jordan, vice president of BW Research, which executed the survey. "Compared to other regions that we have studied, the rare mix of world-class educational institutions, venture capital, entrepreneurial small businesses, supportive government policies, and an eager and educated consumer base make this a state home to one of the strongest and most exciting clean energy sectors in the nation."
