Mass. business confidence continues climbing

Confidence among Massachusetts business owners began 2015 on a high note following a strong December, according to the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM).

AIM's monthly Business Confidence Index recorded a 58.1 on a 100-point scale (50 is neutral). This marks a 0.8-point increase from December and 7.3 points above the January 2013 reading, according to AIM.

“In December, the Index reached a pre-recession level for the first time since the downturn, and January’s reading is the highest in almost eight years, since February 2007,” when it reached 59.2, Raymond Torto, chair of AIM's Board of Economic Advisors, said in a statement.

While there is declining unemployment and strong job creation, Torto noted that much of it stems from the confidence of business owners, some of whom are looking to expand.

AIM's U.S. Index of business conditions, reflecting nationwide conditions, rose 4 points in December to 54.1, its best performance since August 2007, just before the start of the Great Recession. Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Index of conditions was up 3.2 points to 59.3.
