Massachusetts employers believe that Democrat Hillary Clinton will be the next president of the United States, according to a survey of 168 employers conducted by Associated Industries of Massachusetts.
With voting about to begin around the country, the business group in its monthly business confidence survey found that 49 percent of respondents believe Clinton will win the election in November, with 34 percent saying they believed Republican Donald Trump would win. Ten percent predicted Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida would win and another 10 percent said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would prevail.
The survey listed all candidates alphabetically, without party affiliation.
Asked who should be the next president, Clinton came out on top among employers surveyed at 26 percent compared to 21 percent for Trump, 17 percent for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, 16 percent for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 13 percent for Rubio, 11 percent for Cruz and 10 percent for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie 10 percent. Significantly, a quarter of all responding employers checked "other," with the most popular choice being former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
"The survey underscores the degree to which so-called establishment Republican candidates are splitting the votes of people who do not prefer either of the two front-runners, Trump and Cruz. Add the totals for Kasich, Bush, Rubio and Christie and you’re at 55 percent," Richard Lord, president and CEO of AIM, said in a post on the group's blog.
