Mass. annual sales tax-free weekend set for Aug. 29-30

The annual Mass. sales tax holiday will take place the weekend of Aug. 29-30, the Baker-Polito administration announced on Tuesday.

Gov. Charlie Baker said the holiday is a chance to support an economy impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which sparked a multi-month shutdown of most industries statewide.

“This pandemic has created enormous challenges for the Commonwealth’s small businesses, and the sales tax-free weekend is one way that we can encourage more economic activity to help Main Street businesses and local economies,” Baker said in a statement.

The tax-free weekend is an annual tradition which was formally codified in 2018. During the holiday, most items purchased are exempt from the state’s 6.25% sales tax. Consumers typically use the holiday as an opportunity to save on significant purchases, including back-to-school shopping.
