Attorney General Martha Coakley is calling on Sony to comply with the state's data security law in light of a recent breach of the company's network that may have compromised the personal information of millions of users.
Specifically, Coakley claims that Sony has not fully met two components of the law: that the company provide "clear and conspicuous" notice to consumers about the data breach on the homepage of its website and that it notify all affected Massachusetts residents via email and through publicity in the Massachusetts media.
Sony Network Entertainment announced on April 26 that between April 17 and April 19 user account information through its PlayStation Network and Qriocity service may have been compromised through a malicious network attack. The company says there is no evidence that credit card data has been compromised, but can't rule out the possibility entirely. On Monday, Sony also announced that its Sony Online Entertainment network may have been hacked during the same period.
State regulations on data security went into effect March 1, 2010. They were put in place after the 2007 data breach at Framingham-based TJX Cos.
