A waste management company operating in Marlborough and Westminster has been fined $7,373 for violating hazardous waste and solid waste regulations, according to a Wednesday release from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Waste Management of Massachusetts, Inc., a Texas firm with 117 locations in Massachusetts, was fined for transferring waste from its station at 791 Boston Post Road in Marlborough to a landfill in Westminster, which was not an approved destination for such waste. The waste included drums of waste oil and waste coolant.
Additionally, the waste transferred from Marlborough to Westminster was shipped by an unlicensed transporter, MassDEP said. The company had not submitted its five-year solid waste transfer station certification for its Marlborough station
“Companies in the solid waste handling business must be diligent about identifying and properly managing waste liquids, particularly waste oil, in order to minimize exposure to the public health and the environment,” said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s central regional office in Worcester. “Waste Management identified the oil and coolant improperly shipped to its landfill, intercepted the wastes for proper disposal, and notified MassDEP of the incident.”
