Marlborough unemployment falls 44% in four years

The GE facility in Marlborough has brought jobs and investment to the region.

Marlborough’s unemployment rate fell to 3.2 percent in August, marking a 44 percent decrease since August of 2012.

The drop marks a fall from approximately 5.7 percent unemployment four years ago, and positions the city’s current unemployment rate 16 and 35 percent lower than the Massachusetts and national averages respectively, according to information provided in a release by the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This places the city among the top 33 percent of Massachusetts communities with the lowest unemployment rates.

According to MEDC Executive Director Meredith Harris, business expansions and new commercial move-ins -- like the recent opening of the GE Healthcare Life Sciences headquarters in Marlborough -- have contributed greatly to the decline in local unemployment.
