Marlborough renewable energy firm buys $350K site of planned Sturbridge solar array

Photo | Adobe Stock Solar energy is playing an increasingly important role in Massachusetts as the state seeks to ween itself off of fossil fuels.

A 14-acre plot of wooded land adjacent to I-84 in Sturbridge is one step closer to becoming a solar energy production and storage site, after an entity managed by a Marlborough-based energy firm purchased the parcel.

The site with an address of 200 Haynes St. was sold for $350,000 in a deal finalized on Dec. 23, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds records.

The property was sold by 30 Swift LLC, a Sturbridge-based entity which owned the site when it was approved in March by the Sturbridge Planning Board to be the site of a 1.3-megawatt solar array and a 1,280-killowatthour battery storage system.

Castletown Inc., an entity managed by Brian Healey, the president and co-founder of Onsite Renewables in Marlborough, purchased the site. Onsite has worked with Massachusetts municipal agencies to develop solar energy production and storage projects, according to its website.

Plans for the solar energy production and storage site were first proposed to the Sturbridge Planning Board in August 2023, according to municipal application documents posted to the planning board’s website. Plans call for the construction of about 40 rows of solar panels, surrounded by security fencing. The site will be accessed through a new driveway connecting the parcel to Haynes Street.

The property was given a tax assessment value of $119,400 for 2025, according to Town of Sturbridge property records.

Paul Matt of Kelleher & Sadowsky Associates in Worcester served as the listing broker for this transaction.
