A Marlborough maker of medical devices to treat cardiac disorders like atrial fibrillation has expanded its partnership with a Japanese firm to bring the products to the Japanese market and elsewhere in the region.
CardioFocus’ expanded partnership, announced Tuesday, expands a distribution deal made with Japan Lifeline Co. Ltd. in 2014. The expanded agreement will increase the scope of Japanese commercialization efforts and pursue business in other Asia Pacific markets, said CardioFocus Executive Chairman Paul LaViolette.
Japan Lifeline is making a substantial financial inevstment in CardioFocus, the company said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The investment will be used to accelerate the global expansion of CardioFocus’ HeartLight, a visually guided laser balloon technology to treat atrial fibrillation.
The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in July approved the product for commercial use, and cases have been successful at four hospitals, according to CardioFocus.
"In Japan, physicians are responding very positively to the HeartLight System," said Keisuke Suzuki, president and CEO of Japan Lifeline.
