Marlborough Hospital Adds 3-D Mammography

Marlborough Hospital said it has become one of fewer than 100 hospitals nationwide to offer three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening at its Women's Imaging Center in Southborough.

The technology is delivered through a Selenia Dimensions digital mammography system designed by the women's health care company Hologic, Marlborough Hospital said. The 3D mammography technology offers exceptionally sharp images, ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and a "ground-breaking" tomosynthesis platform designed for superior screening and diagnostic performance, according to the hospital. Images are shot at multiple angles and used to produce a series of 1-millimeter thick slices that provide three-dimensional views.

According to Marlborough Hospital, which is owned by UMass Memorial Health Care, there are more than 8,000 breast cancer screening sites in the United States, and about 5,000 have at least one digital mammography system, but fewer than 100 have installed this new system.

"We are thrilled to be offering this latest 3-D mammography technology to our area communities. It offers a sharper image and can help identify problem areas sooner," said Candra Szymanski, interim president and CEO at Marlborough Hospital.
