Marlborough Gets Biotech Industry Nod

The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council has upgraded its "biotech readiness" rating for the city of Marlborough, city officials announced.

The council, which represents biotech firms, universities and other organizations in the state, has upgraded Marlborough from "gold" to "platinum" status.

The added distinction comes from the fact that the city has at least one building pre-permitted for biotech uses, or that it has a shovel-ready, pre-permitted land site with completed state environmental review and municipal water and sewer capacity to meet additional demand.

The industry council group began the BioReady Communities Campaign in 2008 to recognize cities and towns that meet certain criteria for zoning bylaws, building codes and other factors important to biotechnology companies.

Marlborough joins several other platinum communities in the region, including Worcester, Westborough, Grafton, Framingham and Devens.
