Dandelion Energy in Marlborough has expanded access to its geothermal heating and cooling system across most of Massachusetts.
The expansion includes all of the state, except Cape Cod and the Greater Boston area inside the I-95 corridor, according to the company’s Tuesday announcement.
Geothermal, or ground source heat pumps, are dug five feet below the surface. They transfer heat or cool air from the ground to inside the house, and vice versa. In the summer, the system transfers heat inside a home into the ground, and in the winter, it transfers heat from underground into the home.
Nearly 52% of homes use utility gas to heat their homes, according to Dandelion. That creates a big expense for homeowners, Dandelion said, and it undermines the state’s climate objectives. The geothermal system provides savings by eliminating fuel delivery and heating bills, which Dandelion said could save consumers thousands of dollars.
Homeowners can qualify for a $15,000 rebate for a new Dandelion system through the MassSave energy saving rebates program, the company said.
