Marlborough firm to sell chemical terrorism protections

Block Engineering LaserWarn, from Block Engineering, uses an infrared laser beam that can continuously operate over a 2 to 3 kilometer distance to create a trip wire beam that goes off whenever a dangerous chemical crosses the beam.

Following the terror attacks in Paris and Mali, Block Engineering has announced a new suite of products that can be used to protect soft targets, such as stadiums, shopping malls, and transportation terminals against chemical threats.

The Marlborough company has been manufacturing security and surveillance sensors used by commercial, government and military customers since 1956. Many of Block's systems are deployed as part of layered chemical security solutions at critical facilities, such as the Pentagon, according to Block.

The company is offering products, that can detect chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial gases at very low concentrations, Petros Kotidis, Block's CEO, said. One of the products, LaserWarn, uses an infrared laser beam that can continuously operate over a 2 to 3 kilometer distance to create a trip wire beam that goes off whenever a dangerous chemical crosses the beam. The company’s Porthos product is portable and can detect an incoming chemical cloud at distances as much as 3 to 5 kilometers, according to the company.

The company’s solutions have a full library of chemicals they can detect and have been updated to include emerging threats, according to Block.
