Marlborough firm develops tech for waterproof smartphones

Courtesy Xtalic A new coating process from Xtalic could help create waterproof cell phones.

Marlborough’s Xtalic has created a new method of plating USB connectors that will allow for waterproof smartphones.

The new system uses a plating technology combined with nanostructured metal alloys to provide USB-C connectors with superior corrosion protection. A complete waterproofing solution for any mobile device requires a high level of corrosion resistance on the connector contacts, according to Xtalic.

The problem of corrosion of ports, through an unexpected dip in water or even from sweat, becomes more acute with these high-speed charging USB ports, according to the company. This new system is built using patented metal alloy from Xtalic that offers superior performance and lower cost than gold connectors.

The new line of USB connectors is available for customer sampling.
