The Center for Educational Leadership and Technology in Marlborough has been hired to study the information-technology organization at the nation's second largest school district.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has retained the company, known as CELT, to provide a series of recommendations and strategies for enhancing its use of IT resources, the company announced Thursday.

In its more than 25 years of operation, CELT says it has worked with more than 1,500 school districts, 45 state departments of education and several of the country's major philanthropic foundations to improve leadership and technology to improve productivity and student achievement. It says it is one of the largest providers of such services.

The Los Angeles public school system has more than 660,000 students at 1,300 schools, a scale that David Krongard, CELT's chief operating officer, said poses great challenges.

The company plans in-depth studies of the district next year based on an organizational study due to be complete this fall.
