U.S. Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA), a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal, will talk in Worcester on Sunday about the major proposal to overhaul much of the economy to be more environmentally friendly.
Markey will hold a town hall discussion on the bill with U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, a Worcester Democrat. The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Clark University's Atwood Hall.
The Green New Deal would steer the economy toward having no harmful effects on the environment, a proposal sharply dividing Congress and a matter of debate in the 2020 presidential race. In addition to achieving net-zero emissions through renewable energy sources, the bill also calls broadly for securing access to clean air and water for future generations, among other aspects.
Markey, who is running for re-election next year against U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA), introduced the Green New Deal proposal in February with U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY).
