Tewksbury-based grocery store chain Market Basket will open its new Shrewsbury location on Friday, Jan. 13.
The 80,000 square-foot store will be open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays, according to Operations Manager David McLean. The Market Basket-owned MB Spirits at the Shrewsbury site will open on Friday, Jan. 13 as well.
The location will employ 350 associates, according to a Friday press release.
McLean said the eagerly-awaited location fills a niche between Market Basket locations in Hudson, Oxford, and Bellingham. The opening had been delayed because of supply chain problems with equipment for the store.
The grocery store is part of a larger development including a $53-million luxury apartment complex called Edgemere Crossing at Flint Pond, a Clinton Savings Bank branch, and a Starbucks.
Market Basket bought 18 acres of the development property in 2021 for $3 million.
Market Basket traces its roots back to 1908 when Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas settled in Lowell after emigrating from Greece. The couple opened their first store in Lowell in the 1917. In 1975, the family’s 17th location opened, in Salem, New Hampshire, and was the first to be called Market Basket.
Market Basket has other Central Massachusetts locations in Athol, Fitchburg, Leominster, Hudson, Maynard, and Oxford. With the Shrewsbury opening it will operate 88 stores in four New England states.
CORRECTION: The article was first published referring to Market Basket as Lowell-based. The company's headquarters is in Tewksbury.
The Market Basket in Hanover mall is number 91 so shouldn’t Shrewsberry be number 92 and there should be 92 stores in New England?
