Marijuana delivery business applications open this month

Photo | WBJ File Massachusetts voters approved a ballot initiative to legalize cannabis for adult use in 2016.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission will begin accepting applications for prospective adult-use, delivery-only marijuana businesses, as well as for certain microbusinesses seeking delivery endorsements on May 28, the commission announced on Thursday.

The state's medical marijuana program has historically allowed for home delivery to registered and qualifying patients. To date, 18 medical marijuana treatment centers offer the service.

The new recreational delivery license will exclusively be available to certified economic empowerment applicants and social equity program participants for at least two years, beginning once the first licensee has commenced delivery operations. The commission estimates more than 400 applicants are eligible for delivery-only and microbusiness delivery endorsement exclusivity between the two programs.

Once up and running, cannabis delivery drivers will be required to have an operational body camera in use when away from their vehicles to conduct transactions. They will be limited to $10,000 worth of cannabis products in their delivery vehicles at one time, and will be encouraged to limit the amount of cash they have on their person.

Adult-use cannabis delivery will be limited to, per the commission:

  • The municipality where the licensee operates its place of business;
  • Any municipality with adult-use retail operations; or
  • Any municipality which notifying the commission delivery businesses may operate within its borders.
