March Sales Inch Up At BJ's

BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. of Natick said March sales increased 1.7 percent to $870 million compared to the same month a year ago.
Same-store sales decreased 0.1 percent during the month, slowed by an 8.6 percent decline in gasoline sales. Same-store merchandise sales were up 8.5 percent during the month. Same store sales were up 6 percent in March 2008 on a 3.4 percent increase in gasoline sales.
The company said the timing of the Easter holiday accounted for a boost of about 2 percent in same store sales.
Food, cigarettes and computer equipment showed the strongest sales increases compared to March 2008.
